Genocide, Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes
Genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, also known as core international crimes, pose a serious threat to global peace, security and human rights. While these atrocities often occur beyond the borders of the European Union, their consequences are strongly felt within Member States.
Under international law, it is primarily the responsibility of national authorities to investigate and prosecute such crimes. However, recent conflicts in regions surrounding the EU, along with increased refugee arrivals, have created new challenges for Member States, including a growing number of complex cross-border cases.
Effective investigations require specialised knowledge and close coordination between national authorities. They also often involve gathering evidence spread across multiple countries and working with international and third-country partners.
To support these efforts, Eurojust and the EU Network for Investigation and Prosecution of Genocide, Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes, also referred to as the Genocide Prosecution Network, provide assistance to national authorities in their investigations and prosecutions. Their support strengthens cooperation and helps ensure that justice is served in these grave matters.
