Recent technological breakthroughs have led to many positive developments for society. However, cybercriminals have also exploited the speed and anonymity of the internet to carry out a wide range of criminal activities. These include large-scale cyberattacks, the use of malware, phishing, spam, and cryptocurrencies for illegal transactions. Additionally, technology can facilitate serious organised crimes such as terrorism and money laundering.
Because cybercrime often transcends national borders, effective international cooperation is crucial for investigating and prosecuting offenders. National authorities work together using available cross-border investigative tools. The European Judicial Cybercrime Network, based in The Hague, also supports these efforts by fostering collaboration on judicial responses to cybercrime.
