A major seizure of unauthorized cigarettes took place on Friday, May 23, in Heerlen, thanks to cross-border cooperation and intelligence sharing. Authorities from the Combiteam Smoke unit uncovered a total of 16.8 million contraband cigarettes during a targeted operation at a local industrial area.

The bulk of the illegal goods—approximately 15 million cigarettes—were located in a shipping container parked outside a warehouse. Inside the facility, officials discovered an additional 1.8 million cigarettes stored, along with several pallets that appeared to be prepped for distribution.

One individual, reportedly from Eastern Europe, was apprehended on-site and is believed to have played a key role in the smuggling operation. Investigators are actively tracing the origin and intended destination of the shipment. The case is currently under the supervision of the Functional Parket, the prosecutorial body handling such matters.
